Lake Sentani
Lake Sentani lies inland from Jayapura on the north coast of New Guinea. Villages on its shores and islands are known for carved wooden objects and for bark cloth painted with fish, lizards, spirals and other motifs.
Bark cloth from the lake has been collected since the early twentieth century, and painting on bark remains a living practice. Catalogue entries note whether a piece is an older object or a contemporary work.
