Wood responds to its environment. Most damage to carved objects at home comes from rapid changes in humidity and from direct sun.

Three habits

Keep objects out of direct sunlight and away from air-conditioning vents and heaters. Aim for steady humidity rather than a particular number.

Handle with clean, dry hands, supporting the object at its strongest point. Do not oil, polish or clean surfaces without advice from a conservator.
